Though opposites supposedly attract it seems fair to say that in James Holden's case the reverse is true, certainly when it comes to his new signing Petter.
Because like James, Petter (full name Petter Nordkvist) is a multi-talented producer specialising in trance based electronic music, who's starting what looks almost certain to be a glorious career, at the tender age of 19. Though while James spent his early years studying fitfully at Oxford, Petter comes from Sweden, and might just take off even sooner.
Six Songs is his first record for James' label Border Community and it's a six track double vinyl affair that's as impressively varied as it's successfully accomplished. Starting off with 9 minute straight-a-head melodic trancer Altogether (which first appeared on Holden's Balance mix Cd earlier this year) the EP goes on to cover spaced out electro-house on Left Turned, even dabbling a little on click house( on Dica Drive.)
Record 2 takes off into melodic vocal trance territory with Modern Eternity and Tone Diary while EP closer My Pretty Guitar is a DJ tool par excellence, all strings, minimal beats and loads of space for mixing. In fact, each track comes with its bpm speed helpfully marked on the record, undoubtedly helping to gain more spins from jocks.
"Many a label will describe their new artists as a unique talent who is set to make waves in the production world over the years to come, but in Petter's case we genuinely, wholeheartedly, believe this is true," says James on the EP's accompanying press release.
"We hope you will too."
Six Songs is out now.
