"There is a new movement, though it's extremely underground right now. It involves a group of like-minded individuals, all roughly the same age and from similar backgrounds, from various different European capitals, who've all individually decided to take dance music by the scruff of its neck and do something new. It's a new form of house music, one that incorporates techno and breakbeats and its deep and it's quite druggy, but there are also accessible angles."
Chatting to Skrufff recently, London electro guru Damian Lazarus (of Bodyrockers/ Crosstown Rebels fame) name-checked Rob Mello, Steve Bug and Black Strobe amongst his cast of like-minded conspirators, adding 'they've been doing their own thing for some time but they're now slowly but surely starting to penetrate the mainstream.' And Paris based DJ/ producer Ivan Smagghe (aka Black Strobe) looks set to continue doing exactly that with this; his new compilation for UK club outfit Bugged Out.
Featuring standout electro-tech names like fellow French producers The Hacker and David Caretta, the compilation also ranges to techno main-man Jamie Bissmire and electro (clash) stalwarts Zombie Nation, though the overall vibe remains centred around house, albeit of a more musical, song based variety. In fact, at a recent Bugged Out club night in London to launch the CD, Smagghe played considerably harder than the mix featured here, disappointing at least two clubbers who'd preferred the musical style he's laid down for the CD.
