"Sometimes I go to a club and the DJ plays one sound for six hours. How can you do that for six hours- I'm bored in six minutes! But it's the drugs, obviously. As long as the music doesn't change, the crowd's happy."
Speaking to DJ magazine recently, former house hero Armand Van Helden was as unimpressed with the state of modern house as he was with its clubs and DJs, so it's no surprise that his new mix CD New York- a Mix Odyssey veers heavily towards the eclectic. Including classic dance-pop like Blondie's Call Me and Yazoo's Don't Go, the accessible and instantly appealing CD even deviates to the 70s rock of Ram Jam's Black Betty and Yes' excursion into soft rock territory Owner Of A Lonely Heart; some achievement for the man sometimes attributed with inventing speed garage (via his 1995 remix of Tori Amos' Professional Widow).
Underlying it all is Armand's relentless good taste (Felix Da Housecat's Cyberwhore is Da Housecat's best track since Silver Screen) and a refreshing sense of self deprecating humour (notably popping out via track's like Heavy Rock's (I just want to be a) Drummer.
Fun, fresh and well worth a listen, New York- a Mix Odyssey is out shortly on Southern Fried Records.
