Neurofibro is short for Neurofibromatosis, a nerve disorder also known as Von Recklinghausen's Disease, which manifests itself in cancerous tumours, skin disorders and bone deformities. Hearing loss, tinnitus and even death are all possible prognoses for the condition, making it an odd title for an album, though the link comes from producer Mark Stewart's reality, as a sufferer of the rare condition.
Quite how serious his condition is remains unclear, though he's certainly been able to create an album that impressive and highly listenable if not exactly ground-breaking.
Album opener Peace Of Mind, the track he launched Claro Intelecto with in 2003, remains his best, its clicks and deeply melancholic strings and chords setting a mood and pace usually associated with the likes of Carl Craig at his best. Percentages follows into Black Dog / classic Warp style territory, it's funky electro beat and space age swirls offsetting the sombre mood sweetly, while Baudrillard's Supper head off even deeper, it's haunting piano lead leaving little room for joy.
Despite such meanderings, Neurofibro also hints at uplifting even optimistic spirit, suggesting Mark Stewart's boldness is already paying off. Release date is April 28 on Ai Records.
