"I am a singing DJ. I sing over instrumentals or talk about what's on my mind, especially in the beginning of night when people are still sipping their drinks. Because, in my opinion, a good DJ is not only musically responsible, he is the host of the party."

Norwegian Kings Of Convenience singer Erlend Oye also brands himself an 'indie pop star' on the press release accompanying his debut DJ mix CD for K7's latest DJ Kicks compilation, though his commentary is firmly of the tongue-in-cheek self-deprecating variety rather than idle boasting. Though he genuinely is an indie pop star, and judging by the 9 acapellas featured here, a damn fine singing DJ too, tackling the likes of Opus 3's early 90s rave anthem Fine Day and Morrissey's 80s Manchester ballad There Is A Light that Never Goes Out, with style and more than a little grace.

Beneath his lyrical enhancements are 18 superbly selected and seamlessly sequenced new disco, electro (clash) style house cuts varying from Avenue D's sexcore future classic 3D3F (as in Too drunk to fuck) and Silicon Soul's remix of Royksopp's Poor Leno. Combined, the overall package works a treat, catching echoes of Jacques Lu Cont and Tiga at their best, though more importantly, presenting Erlend Oye as a serious future clubland star himself. With guest appearances completed on DJ Hell's new album, the year looks set for Erlend's taking.

Erland Oye: DJ Kicks is out on April 19
