Though you might not immediately recognise Boris Dlugosch's name, you're more than likely to know Sophie Ellis Bextor's Groovejet or Moloko's breakthrough smash hit of 1999 Sing It Back. And if those two don't ring a bell, how about Mouse T's Horny (the one that goes 'I am horny, horny, horny, horny)?
Because Boris had a big hand in making all three records (discovering Bextor, remixing Sing It Back and signing Horny) making him one of the key tastemakers of the last five years of house. So it's significant then, that no house music of any description appears on Bionic Breaks, Boris' first ever mix CD, some 15 years into his career.
Instead the impeccably mixed double CD combines classic hip hop, old skool breaks and brand new disco into a timeless blend of seriously top quality electro. From opening track Being Boiled (Human League's still incredibly contemporary 70s debut hit, to Zoot Woman's It's Automatic, Dlugosch effortlessly mixes and matches the old and the new, highlighting lost gems like Hashim's Al-Naafiysch as much as Metro Area's biggest club record Miura (on each CD). Several more tracks pop up in duplication (Grandmaster Flash's Renegades Of Funk, Iz& Diz's Mouth and Gary's Gang's Makin Music) highlighting his willingness to break the rules as much as the quality of the individual tracks.
With other highlights including Man Parrish's Hip Hop, Be Bop (Don't Stop) and New Order's still great Confusion, the album is also reasonably accessible, serving as an excellent taster of proper electro, old and new. Bionic Breaks is out now.
