"With songs like Wordy Rappinghood, something magical happens and it's almost beyond our control. If we could control it, we'd do it more often. But it doesn't happen every day and if you get lucky then it happens once or twice in a lifetime." Chris Frantz, Tom Tom Club (Talking Heads), November 2003
Chicks On Speed's greatest concept has always been their name, providing the Berlin based trio with a credible, cutting edge, ironic platform from which they've been able to spin off increasingly successful music, fashion and merchandise trajectories. Like all good conceptual artists though, their ideas outweigh the artefacts, meaning their music often lacks the quality that their brand name ideally suggests.
With new single Wordy Rappinghood, however, the track's quality for once matches the concept, principally because they've tapped into Chris Franz's magic by covering the Tom Tom Club original seemingly note for note. That they've succeeded is proved by the endorsement of Tom Tom Club themselves, whose singer Tina Weymouth both sings on the track and plays live with the girls in April.
