"To use one's appearance to challenge society is a powerful, personal and political statement. It demonstrates vision, strength & courage. The population cling to social norms in fear of the knowledge that our individual & global predicament is bleak."
Flamboyantly eccentric and unashamedly camp, legendary London club promoter Matthew Glamorre is un unlikely figurehead to launch a global revolution, though he's as serious about his ideology as he is about dressing up. He's also serious about encouraging and embracing musical experimentation and change, a principle he's put into practise on Kashpoint's first compilation. Featuring 18 tracks from the cream of London's eclectic/ electric/ electro underground, the CD is an unsurprisingly mixed bunch of styles and talent, that contains more than a few gems and likely future stars.
Chief among these contenders are Cantankerous, whose ragga-electro-dub style track Night Shift throbs with urban energy and Baxendale's I Built This City, an 80s style Human League meets the Beach Boys style pop anthem. Veteran scenesters Princess Julia (who made her name starring in Visage's Fade To Grey) and Boy George (in his new guise of The Twin) also shine on a CD that's a broad and representative slice of radical dressing and power pop in London underground club-land in 2004.
"We encourage people to express how they feel - through appearance, art, music - whatever. Speak Out - Speak Up - Be Seen if you can't be Heard," Matthew concludes. Kashpoint is out now, in all good record (and fashion) shops.
