When the Pet Shop Boys brilliant debut single West End Girls topped the UK pop charts in1986, pop mogul/tastemaker Jonathan King dismissed the synth-pop duo as one hit wonders though 17 years on, while King languishes in a jail cell for sex offences, the Pet Shop Boys are Britain's most successful pop duo.
Combining Chris Lowe's accessible though emotional electronic sound-beds with Neil Tennant's interesting, often stimulating lyrics, they've carved themselves a lucrative niche all of their own, in the process notching up some 33 UK top 20 hits.
Currently reinvigorated by the 80s revival ('We haven't sold our shares in electroclash just yet, we really like it,' Neil Tennant said recently) the pair are regular presences at London nights like The Cock, Nerd and Nag though, in reality they've never slipped far from fashion or London nightlife. And PopArt, their new double CD compilation, shows why, mixing up their seminal 80s gems like Rent, Love Comes Quickly and West End Girls, alongside 90s favourites including Left To My Own Devices, Where The Streets Have No Name and Being Boring.
Diminishing the overall high quality of the CD are one or two curios (Go West and New York City Boy) though Pop Art is otherwise impressive. Release date is November 17 on Parlophone.
