Over two decades since he helped invent hip hop, Grandmaster Flash remains one of the world's greatest DJs and he's a superb choice of mixmaster for the second CD release from recently revived classic New York label Salsoul. Intended as 'a non-stop mix of Salsoul party classics', 'Dance Your Ass Off' is that and more, also providing a superb aural document of tunes from New York's golden era of clubbing, the late 70s..
From dancefloor anthems like Loleatta Holloway's Runaway (more recently covered by Masters At Work) and First Choice's fabulous disco ballad Dr Love, the CD comprises 20 tracks of string- drenched, vocal filled songs, all mixed together with Flash's unerring hand-ear co-ordination. In practise, that means handclaps, party background sound effects (whoops, hollers and screams galore) seamlessly mixed together into the tunes, most of which strike welcomingly familiar mental chords, having been sampled so heavily.
Polished, perfected and seamlessly delivered, Dance Your Ass Off is a top quality mix of top tunes, top label and top DJ- it's out now on Salsoul.
