Bursting onto the world's superclub dance floors in 2000 with his tuneful and haunting tranced out smash Knights Of The Jaguar, Underground Resistance operative DJ Rolando, immediately joined the pantheon of Detroit club land greats, and his new mix CD Nite Life 016 should enhance his soaring reputation still further.
Melodic, eclectic and seriously funky, his selection both highlights his own impressively open approach to what fits within the term 'techno' while proving that it doesn't have to include the relentless, never-to-be-escaped loops favoured by many European producers. Not that he's rejected Europe entirely, finding space for the likes of ultra-talented Swedish giant Adam Beyer and Germany's Steve Bug, though its Detroit which remains the central source for the CD. He's also clearly comfortable mixing up classics alongside the new, merging Terrence Parker's Love got Me High alongside Mr De's Space Odyssey.
Past DJs doing Nite:Life compilations have included New York soulful house veteran Danny Krivit and disco king producer Joey Negro and Rolando proves an equally superb choice to present Detroit techno in the way that it really deserves.
Peak moment tracks on what's a standout compilation include Toob's Union Street (a string drenched melancholic techno ballad) and Jeff Mills' equally moving closer See This Way.
Nite Life 016 is out on October 13.
