With Scottish independent label Soma being the first to discover France's most influential producers 'du jour' (of the day- French Ed) Daft Punk in 1993, it's reasonable to assume their new Gallic protégé Master H is likely to be something special and judging by his debut album 13, he certainly is.
Comprising thirteen tracks of moving, melodic, emotional house music, the album's top and tailed by the achingly sombre soundtrack from La Femme Du Boulanger (The Butcher's Wife), a classic film from the South Of France. Master H (known to his folks as Hassen Gouaned) cut his teeth DJing in St Tropez, graduating eventually to elite fashion parties in Paris and New York. One such high society bash brought him into contact with France's first ambassador of dance music Laurent Garnier, who liked him so much, he gave him a summer residency at his club night in Corsica. Soon after, Soma came along (via a party in Miami) and two years down the line, 13 is the link-ups first truly tasty fruit. Including contributions from several Soma heavyweights (notably Silicon Soul on the title track) the album also features Glaswegian house head DJ Q, who lends a hand for the tougher, techier track HQ.
Overall, 13 demonstrates that Master H has absorbed all the superior production values fans of Soma have come to expect and applied them to his own distinctly French background and style, with magnificent affect. 13 is out on September 8.
