Starting his career as Ireland's first internationally recognised techno DJs, David Holmes is nowadays revered as one of dance culture's most forward thinking curators of sound, jumping genres and musical roles as effortlessly as he used to mix records.

With new single Sugarman, however, he's cast his sound backwards, covering the dark 60s ballad which he first featured on his critically revered compilation come Get It, I got It, in 2002. Holmes new version includes backing vocals from the song's original creator Rodriguez, who he tracked down to a Detroit building site where the 69 year old was working as a labourer, last year.

Haunting, moving and bitter-sweetly tuneful, the song tells of drug soaked loves and lives, underscored by the vocals of Holmes' protégé Petra Jean Phillipson and melancholic strings by the arranger of the Beatles' Sergeant Peppers album. Remixes come from Peaches cohort Gonzales (here providing an unusually straightforward remix) and Maurice Fulton, who bolsters the track's melody with proper dance floor beats.

Sugarman is out now.
