Nowadays synonymous with Notting Hill's massive annual street party the Carnival Norman Jay MBE remains of one Britain's most genuinely popular and able DJs, relentlessly following his own musical agenda, with just occasional musical deviations to incorporate the vagaries of club land fashion.

One such deviation was his passionate embrace of Timo Maas' Doomsknight remix, a track he liked so much, he famously span it six times during one Carnival set in 2001, though what he's most keen on offering is 'black music', ie hip hop, soul, reggae and jazz, all mixed up imagination and a firm focus on dancing and most importantly fun.

And Good Times 3 exactly reflects his DJ style, including recognisable gems from the likes of Chaka Khan, The Chi-Lites and The Jackson 5, alongside instantly enjoyable (relative) obscurities such as The Ethiopians' Train To Skaville and King Britt's If I Lost You (exclusive to the CD).

Jay gained his MBE (a British 'honour' usually awarded to bishops and higher echelon civil servants) for 'services to music and DJing' and it's a mark of his credibility that he both accepted the honour and even uses it to full effect. Always a proper DJ, he remains both a role model and a virtual king of today's increasingly mutating club culture. Long may he reign over us, or at least over Notting Hill for the bank holiday weekend in August.

Joey & Norman Jay MBE Presents Good Times 3 is out now on React Records.
