Something Old, Something New
Gillie
(freshdisko)

Reported by Bing Tuesday, July 22 2003

It has been a long, long time coming but finally a demo CD mixed by local Dj Gillie has made it to my stereo. Featuring a mixture of tried and tested favourites and signature tunes alongside some of Gillie’s biggest tracks this year, he has nicely avoided the “I’m more up-front than you” game that is so easy to get sucked into. Instead, Gillie has delivered a mix that takes in all the best elements and indeed the entire spectrum of his sound and packages it into a tidy, 74-minute journey.

There are deep, percussive grooves, not quite pop tracks, some darker, harder tek sounds and a dash of progressive house for good measure. The tribal aspects of Gillies sound reoccur throughout the mix, tying the tracks in nicely together and providing continuity but it is the funky bass lines that really makes the dance floor sweat and this CD work so well.

The programming and over all track selection of Something Old, Something New is impeccable.
Gillie puts a personal stamp on the sound of the mix with a few favourite a capellas and a lashing of effects. The key here is subtlety and it really works. The Realm and Magnifique work excellently but it is the Bad Habbitapella that really blew me away, basically because I have never liked it and somehow Gillie has made it sound excellent running over the top of Chris Lum’s Stinky Tool. My only grip with the entire mix last just a few seconds. I think Gillies biggest track of the last five months (Loose Heads – Like This) could have done without the Lovely Dayapella. On the other hand when it is perfectly mixed and in key, it makes it hard to bitch convincingly.

Halo’s Dark Clouds is a very welcome and rare gem (with a rolling bass line that gets stuck in your head for weeks), Guy William’s Go has been doing the business for him on the floor and how can you go past the one two finishing punch of ’01 signature track Cirque Volume 1 and Sam Lo More’s Takin’ Hold! This mix will be up on freshdisko’s broadcast section (very soon) but if you need a copy on CD simply ask Gillie next time you are in the club. After he has finished Djing, of course.
