Krisma is the working name for veteran Italian duo Maurizio Arcieri and Christina Moser who began their recording careers in the 60s (Maurizio actually toured with the Beatles in 1965). During the intervening four decades the duo worked with Vangelis in London (during the capital's original punk era of 1976 -78) and throughout continued experimenting with electronic music.
S.H.A.D.O. electro sees the duo teaming up with Italian label S.H.A.D.O. to showcase the imprint's current electronic offerings alongside six of their own retro compilations.
Opening Krisma track Cathode Ray kicks off the collection superbly, the 1980s track featuring nu beat style electro beats coupled with uplifting futuristic vocal lines. Valvola's single Teenage Power continues the retro new beat theme (despite coming out in 2002) as does Mixromar's T Luminscent (itself relatively new, being released in 2,000. Pine AM's Flashin Light is immediately reminiscent of New Order's Blue Monday, the drum beat exactly matching Blue Monday's disco pace.
In fact, it's the newer acts who provide the compilations finer moments, with some Krisma tracks, notably Many Kisses, veering dangerously close to retro hippy nonsense.
S.H.A.D.O. ELECTRO is out now.
