"The most important thing to me was that all of the songs have a sense of humour, but at the same time a message of hope and faith. Because that's all I feel that you really have in life anyway: the faith that, no matter how things work out, that is going to be how they're supposed to be."

Speaking on the press release accompanying his new album Paper Monsters, Depeche Mode frontman Dave Gahan admits he's had more than a few chances in life and judging by the quality of this, his first ever solo album, he's finally learned to take them. Because rather than following the covers route of band mate Martin Gore, or the mediocre solo effort characters like Jagger and Richards are so prone to tale, he's created a monumental, powerful, listenable titan that's exactly like Depeche Mode . It's also as good as anything the band have done in 10 years, combining Gahan's interesting, intimate lyrics with late night songs of genuine quality.

. In fact, it's so similar in style, mood and ambience that cynical listeners might suggest it is Depeche Mode, which should be good for the record's sales prospects, given the millions of non cynical listener who still love Depeche Mode and will equally love this album.

No surprises them but in this case that's more than enough.
