Irish electro act Decal started life in 1993 as a duo comprising Alan O Boyle and Dennis McNulty, releasing their debut album Ultramack 004, in 1994. Going on to release tracks for an impressive roster of indie labels including Warp, React and Planet Mu, two became in 2001 when McNulty quit to develop a career in sound art, leaving O Boyle to carry the Decal torch alone.
Clearly inspired rather than crushed by his new solo status, O Boyle has created a seriously accomplished new album that's both contemporary and progressive, mixing breakbeat style electro grooves with melancholic even menacing melodies. Signed to Andy Weatherall's Rotter's Golf Club, the album sits closer to the breaks style electro favoured by the label, though is catchy and well written enough to clash with the disco electro styles currently rejuvenating London clubland. O'Boyle, in fact, regularly DJs at Dublin electro night Bleep at Bodkins, and has clearly been thinking of the dance floor throughout.
Easy to listen to and shining instead of dull, Brightest Star comes out in July.
