Much maligned, though still hugely popular, trance is a genre that's always polarised opinions, though as with every single genre, some tunes can always be considered classics. And looking at the track-listing on Moonshine's latest mix CD, trance has certainly had more than its fair share.
Culling tracks from the last five years, the West Coast (US) label has sensibly chosen many of the genre's defining musical moments, from Ibiza anthems like Energy 52's Café Del Mar, Binary Finary's 1998 and BBE's 7 Days & One Week, to earlier offerings from Age of Love and Union Jack (2 Full Moons and a Trout). Similarly uplifting moments come from Darude (Sandstorm), Grace (not Over Yet) and Paul Van Dyk (For An Angel) though how comfortable the East German star is at being called trance yet again would be an interesting question.
Also somewhat incongruous on the collection is Kernkraft 400's (brilliant) Zombie Nation, the first key electroclash anthem, and its used here as the opening track on the second CD.
As with any 'classic' collection, some of the selections don't quite make it, notably ATB's 9am (Til I Come), Sash's Encore Un Fois and System F's Out Of The Blue, though overall Moonshine's collection does what it says on the label.
