"The Sweet were very much to blame for my musical ability. When I joined Specimen I bought a keyboard, stuck some coloured stickers on and sucked those cheeks in hard."
20 years after busking it with seminal London punk/goth kings Specimen, Nag, Nag, Nag chief Jonny Slut finds himself leading yet again an incredibly influential sub culture that's shaking London nightlife to its very foundations. Recently branding the genre Freakcore, he's keen to stress the anything goes musical policy that's made his club the capital's most ground breaking night since Shoom.
"It's dance music with a freaky attitude, whether that's punk, electro, disco or house," he told Skrufff. "It's music for freaks and outsiders".
And Hooked on Radiation, Jonny's first Atomizer co-production with fellow Nag resident Fil OK, remains one of the scene's biggest tunes, particularly since the Pet Shop Boys remixed it and put out 500 white labels at their own expense. Maintaining the original's highly catchy vocal line, they've tightened up the beat and added their own trace of minor chord melancholia, turning an already good song into something special. Floorfillingly fantastic and guaranteed to light fires on all freaky dancefloors, Hooked On Radiation is a dirty bomb of a tune that looks certain to explode sooner rather than later. The question is not, if, but when.
