Founded on a simple formula of selecting full length 12 inch dance mixes of quality club records that may or may not have been chart hits, Hed Kandi's compilation series have become a best case example of how to market dance music.
Conceived by acid house veteran promoter/DJ turned Jazz FM mogul Mark Doyle, the series has become a byword for soul, disco and hip hop selections, with their retro selections Back To Love, proving the most popular. And version 3, their first for 12 months looks certain to continue Hed Kandi's success, containing a predictably fine selection of definitive club records from between 1989 and 1992.
CD1 concentrates on house and soul, kicking off with Frankie Knuckles' garage anthem The Whistle Song which segues into Lisa Stansfield's People Hold On followed by Sydney Youngblood's one hit wonder If Only I Could. While both tracks were radio friendly pop hits, Doyle's selections are funky and extended, a description that fits equally well for Crystal Water's biggest hit Gypsy Woman and Urban Soul's Alright (mixed by one Sasha, in decidedly un-trance like mode.)
CD2 explores a soul tinged hip hop tack, finding space for rap classics like Erik B and Rakim's Paid In Full and Mantronix' King Of The Beats, alongside poppier offerings like Dub Be Good To Me (from Fatboy Slim's previous persona Beats International). Tom Browne's classic Funkin' for Jamaica (also a one hit wonder) similarly stands out, featured here in its much rarer 1991 Extended Remix format).
Mark Doyle and his Hed Kandi series have consistently benefited from his open and friendly personality which he appears to be still applying, judging by the quality of the tracks he's collected for his new version 3.
"Longevity is gained from relationships you build with people, it's very easy to make money quickly but basically burn a lot of bridges," he told Skrufff last year.
"I believe in helping people who help you."
