London veteran soul selector Greg Edwards made his name in the 70s, launching legends including Harold Melvin, the O' Jays and Billy Paul, and 30 years on, he remains synonymous with the genre through radio shows like his latest one Soul Spectrum on Capital. And as a long term expert on black music in general, he's turned primarily to hip hop and classic jazz for volume 2 of his series Waxin Lyrical.
The CD's concept is loosely based around the spoken word, consciousness raising soul music, which allows Edwards to segue The Floater's astrological love anthem Float On, into Dean Francis's anti-gun rant Without Guns. Kurtis Blow's If I Ruled The World and Gang Starr's Jazz Thing further distinguish a first half that concludes with Redhead King Pin's anti-violence anthem Do The Right Thing (unfortunately here as an acapella, a shame, given the original's fantastic tune).
Part two features Quincy Jones teaming up with the Watts Prophets for the poetic Beautiful Black Girl, setting the tone for a journey into classic jazz funk by legendary players including Roy Ayres, Marcus Miller and Bootsy Collins.
Waxin' Lyrical is an intelligent, uplifting selection of serious soul and is out on May 26, on Obsessive Records.
