"There's nothing really going on in Grenoble, it's not a big city. There are no electro or techno parties there, actually there's nothing to do at all. Maybe that's why we have time to make music."
As Oxia's Goodlife label mate The Hacker recently told Skrufff not much happens in Grenoble, yet the previously obscure South Western France town is nowadays France's most creative region for electronic music. The reason is down to Oxia, the Hacker and their long term friends/ colleagues Miss Kittin and Kiko, all four of whom have become key producers in the techno end of electro that's revitalised clubland from London to Berlin to New York. For Oxia (aka Olivier Raymond) though, his first love clearly remains techno and on Vital Session, his first ever mix CD he demonstrates exactly why.
Selecting tracks from Grenoble plus a smattering of techno's usual suspects (Jeff Mills, Umek, Laurent Garnier and Slam) he opts for the funkier, housier end of the genre, mixing the cuts together into a seamless, high energy , melodic set. As well as numerous cuts from the Hacker and himself he also includes Body Music by Phunky Data, the nom de guerre of Oxia and Kiko, before concluding with two definitive techno albums, Slam's Positive Education and Laurent Garnier's Man With a Red Face.
Oxia-Vital Sessions is out on April 21 on Uwe Records.
