Metro Area is the recording persona of Darshan Jesrani and Morgan Geist , two New York producers currently riding high on the wave of interest in all things electro, punk and 80s inspired. Though when the pair appeared in the New York Times last Autumn as their debut album hit US stores, the journalist suggested they "seem personally offended by the swift rise of electroclash, they hope its fall will be even swifter. "
In fact their music bears much closer comparison to France's greatest recent export in recent years, Daft Punk, being stripped down, disco tinged, instrumental tracks with distinct echoes of the past."We consider ourselves to be making dubs of old tracks that never really existed," Geist told the Times and it's a fair description of the musical selection they unveil here.
Album opener Intro serves its purpose functionally, a whoosing building synth sound introducing Dance Reaction, a hand clapped filled, string soaked disco groove. With a keyboard synth carrying the vocal lead, punctuated by stabbing sampled chord and effects it's an appropriate taster for the rest of the album. Miura, built around what sounds like a Tom Tom Club sample, is their best known club track (ironically being a firm favourite of electroclash DJs like JoJo De Freq and Jonny Slut) and follows the same basic groovy disco format that permeates the rest of the album.
Metro Area is out now on Geist's own label Environs Records.
