"If you could reduce all my activities to one sentence, you could say I sieve music out for people, whether as an A&R, radio presenter or DJ. And that's I've done with this Fashion TV mix, particularly on the second CD contains which contains the key tunes I've sieved out in the last year."
Panhandling for musical gold has brought Pete Tong a wealth of riches and influence though the pioneer prospector retains both his hunger and greed after 15 years as the world's most influential DJ. And putting his hand to this new CD for global cable TV company Fashion TV, he's clearly retained his Midas touch, delivering an accessible yet credible compilation, that's both distinctive and highly enjoyable.
CD 1 pursues an uptempo party vibe, opening with Lil Louis' highly appropriate party anthem I Called U Pete Tong, before segueing into similarly funky tracks from Trevor Jackson's Playgroup, Gus Gus and long term associate Armand Van Helden (resurfacing here in his still controversial persona Ghandi Khan). Gems from Fishbone, Paris & Healey and America's Thunderpuss further distinguish a mix that's friendly yet firing on all house cynlinders.
CD2, though, is where he really steps into new territory, delivering a sweetly listenable downtempo and thought provoking mood through tracks from the likes of Underworld, Mint Royale and Seasaw Paw (their excellent Green Boat [the one with the Neneh Cherry sample]).
Telling Skrufff recently he'd thought of the mix in 'filmic' terms, Tong explained that one of his key criteria for track selection strategy had been to avoid obvious tunes.
"There's lots of beautiful music out there that people often don't remember but I think these tracks are special, without sounding too pretentious. They'll turn you on to the artist themselves and they work as a collection," he said.
Fashion TV Presents Pete Tong is out on March 31st in the UK and is also available on Fashion TV's website.
