Like almost all the key producers behind today's new electro movement, German player Savas Pascalidis made his name through rave and techno, coming up on Stuttgart's late 80s/ scene initially as an acid house/ new beat DJ then moving onto techno in the early 90s.
Nowadays firmly centred on the electro (clash) scene his new album for DJ Hell's Gigolo Records betrays his earlier interests, combining slamming analogue keyboards and beats with acid chords and highly varied songs. Album opener Space Age Love Song kicks off in classic Deutsche electro style, electronic instruments interweaving vocal style melodies over handclaps, acid house beats and a simple bass drum. On track2 (Fly With The Wind), however, he's off delving into an early 80s style Morodor-esque disco world of funky basslines and I Feel Love style ambiences and lyrics, performed in an other-worldly Supernature style delivery.
His best known track to date remains the electroclash favourite Tar, an 80s style Gothic anthem that remains a staple favourite of Jonny Slut's sets at Nag, Nag, Nag, and the track pops up to mark the midpoint of the record. Pausing for breath, he lowers the tempo considerably for ambient-ish soundscape Silverland (curiously dedicated' in meory of W Riechman') before going squelchy electro again for the equally curiously named Finding Enemies.
Veering from bouncy electro acid house and retro disco throughout, Pascalidis delivers an album that's a little hit and miss to some degree, though successful in the sum of its parts.
