Alpinestars happily straddlle the continually fertile territory between dance and rock music and on this, their third single from the critically acclaimed album White Noise, they plough their furrow for all its worth, coming on like a cross between Echo & the Bunnymen and New Order.

Vocal, melodic and instantly appealing, Burning Up is a song in the traditional sense of the term though is equally effective when dance-floored up by Prince Quick and Different Gear. The Prince's mix largely ditches the acoustic guitars in favour of skippety beats and tranced out instrumentals, breaking down to a minimalist beat, to allow the vocals to come whooshing back in. Different Gear's mix is similarly reworked, though the groove they provide is heavier, housier, and generally more thumping, while the vocals are edited and sampled (and even vocodered just a little?)

Burning Up is out on March 17 and looks set to consolidate Alpinestars' reputation as ones to watch for 2003.
