"I don't think DJing is that cool. I don't like the image of the silver boxes and the hooded jacket and crappy sunglasses. I don't like the supposed glamour in DJing and I even hate the name I'm a DJ? I don't think so."
Despite his protestations, Jacques Lu Cont's mix CD for Fabric proves he's not only a DJ but also one of the finest spinners in today's club culture. While his technically trickery and seamless mixing skills may indeed be less than perfect, his ability to select and sequence old and new club tracks to end up with something fresh is first rate, making sense, as he puts it, as a party mix.
Fabric 09 , in fact, is a superb compilation CD for party hosts, both discerning ones and those hoping to impress, combining credible 80s hits from the likes of Tom Tom Club, Eurythmics and the Pixies, alongside funky, feel good club tunes from names to drop like Crazy Penis, Royksopp and his own Zoot woman.
If there's a dominant theme to the CD it's disco, rooted in the kind of thumping electro grooves previously championed so successfully by Tiga. Lu Cont claims to feel isolated and unaffected by trends, though his astutely timeless selection and relentless attention to keeping the dancefloor energy high, places him easily alongside the electro (clash) he probably loathes as much as he does mainstream house DJs. Whatever, he's delivered the best mix CD yet from the continually improving Fabric series, which at #6 for online club members, is fantastic value for money.
