'I had an idea where the track was going to go, even before they sent us the parts and vocals. If you listen to the original, it's not really the music that people remember, it's his vocals.'
Princess Julia sideman John Taylor is one of London's key electroclash producers of the moment, both as a member of Richard Norris' The Droyds and remixer of both U Spin Me Round and Steve Strange's upcoming Fade to Gray. Here he maintains Pete Burns original vocal style, subtracting the early 8os high energy groove for a Gary Glitter style sleazy electro sound. Retro but strikingly contemporary, their remix successively updates the original, no mean achievement given that Dead Or Alive's first version remains an all time disco classic.
Mark Moore's equally excellent version also looks to the 80s though adds Dan Hartman style (as in Relight My Fire) disco pom poms over a melodic and somewhat tranced out disco groove. Teaming up with Mr Motion, they rework the original's vocal parts, emphasising its minor keys and enhancing the tune simultaneously.
Messing with a classic is always hard, though both of the two above mixes successfully pull it off. D Bop's Club Mix,and Metro's Kylie style (Can't Get You Out Of My Head') versions both fail miserably and are best avoided.
