The Annual Tour 2002 @ Roundmidnight (21/12/2002)

Reported by Tristan Monday, December 23 2002

Hello there?. Love life not going the way you had planned? Tired of the search for ?the one?? Well you?ve come to the right place. Welcome to the Ministry of Sound Dating Agency open for one night only. Come in out of the night to our premises at Syrup and lets see who we?ve got on our books that could be right for you.

Firstly though there are some requirements. As you can see from everyone here, our one night only opening has attracted a varied crowd of all shapes and sizes and generally speaking a tad more classy than your general Hobart crowd. While construction vests are permitted, yeti boots tend to be frowned upon. Our sound system is the norm with volume varying widely depending on your position in the premises but as I?m sure you?ll agree it is more than adequate. Our premises here at Syrup have had it?s detractors but from our point of view, they are not the people we aim to attract. While a dark and dingy place for a dating agency may not seem ideal we here at the Ministry of Sound can?t enough of that underground vibe.

But enough of my wheeling and dealing let?s get to the reason you?re here. Tonight we have four people who could be the one you lonely singles have spent many soul destroying nights trawling nightclubs in search of.

The first person we have for your perusal is Gillie. Residing in Hobart, Gillie is fond of long walks along the beach and progressively tinged vocal house. Interests include Love You Some More by Cevin Fisher, and all things progressive. Unfortunately local conditions haven?t suited him with unexplained shifts in volume throughout his set. Gillie skirts the border of house and progressive with some big electro tinged basslines making it almost driving uptempo house. Tonight Gillie is interested in a house based set full of smooth progressive, lighter than is normal for him but with selections like Monza?s Turn to Dust Gillie is always guaranteed to rekindle that lost passion.

Also available for inspection is Sydneysider Ben Korbel. A sucker for a beautiful sunrise, Ben?s interests include international travelling, and has this year taken in the dance music mecca?s of London, Barcelona, Ibiza and New York. Ben has long been sought after by the Tasmanian progressive faithful ever since a rather understated performance at Carbon last year. Ben?s features include everything from minimal tribal progressive house to melodic progressive with piano lines, effect laden vocals and mid tweaking not excluded. However while Ben enjoys traversing genre boundaries, here at the MOS Dating Agency he is well and truly filed under progressive. Ben?s ability shows a clear heritage from big room skills honed in the capital of Australian house music, with enticing selections such as the Lexicon Avenue Mix of Dirty Vegas ? Ghosts. However he will not shy away from including a touch of breaks for his and the crowds enjoyment. Ben perhaps needs to be less reckless at time though as unleashing beat driven tracks with enormous low end such as Wonder by Patrice Strike can wreak havoc with those unaccustomed to this level of talent.

If there is one person we don?t want to find romantic happiness, then it is Mark Dynamix. All of us here have a soft spot for Mark and we?d like to hang on to him as long as possible! Also from Sydney, it?s red roses and drives through the countryside which Mark uses to set those flames of love alight. Amazingly hard to pigeon hole Mark is one of the most accepting DJ?s around, playing everything and anything as long as it is up to his impeccable standard. Mark is cautious with his heart but when the time comes, knows what is required, for example opening up the throttle of desire with Frequency by Futureshock . A bag of tricks is one way to describe him as he throws caution to the wind placing tech, progressive, house, breaks, funk and scratching into his dance music blender. Mark pays no heed to genre boundaries and will woo a potential partner with pumping tech progressive, dark chunky breaks and electro progressive breaks. Not afraid of a bit of adventure, Mark enjoys twisted tech, (Phil Kieran -My House), trancier progressive (Nat Monday ? Waiting [Hooligan Mix]), damn classics (Slam ? Virtuoso) and straight out extravagance Green Velvet ? Lalaland (acapella) but it?s the way he shamelessly integrates it all which makes Mark a real lady killer. If this Dynamo hasn?t got you weak at the knees already then when he scratches his way to an epiphany over the top of the dangerously violent bassline of Mundo - DJ Ladida he will no doubt unlock the key to your heart.

The last thing the Ministry of Sound Dating Agency aims to do is hurt you, so one of traits is to tell it as we see it. With this in mind one customer we have had difficulty with is international, Sally Doolally. While traits such as writing poetry and singing sweet serenades get her off on the right foot, she does have some flaws. Being presented with the prime opportunity of an extraordinarily energetic crowd, she delved into what I describe with some difficulty as psy-trance without the psy elements, leaving just a beat and some atmospheric samples. Strangely enough Ben, Mark and Sally have all used the JJJ airwaves to court companions and tonight all three echoed their pastr Mixup sets. Unfortunately while Ben?s was remarkable and Mark?s was technically unfathomable, Sally?s was tedious. This though we feel is just her method of playing hard to get. As while this tactic does scare away several people, she knows that those that remain are ripe for the picking.

As you can see the Ministry of Sound Dating Agency has something for everyone and everything for someone. At this festive time of the year, we know that more than a few loves have been warmed from our special one night opening at Syrup. I can also guarantee ?that scratching? over ?that bassline? has left plenty of devotees with a spark in the eye and a rising temperature in the coldest of hearts
